Congratulations to Natalie Haydt for receiving a Frostburg State Graduate Research Grant to support her study of turtle populations in the C&O Canal National Historic Park and Jacey Brooks who received a Frostburg Foundation Opportunity Grant for her work on the effects of acid mine drainage remediation on stream-breeding salamanders. Check out our newest publication, Relative importance of timber harvest and habitat for reptiles in experimental forestry plots in early view at Forest Ecology and Management.
I'm pleased to announce that Natalie Haydt and Jacey Brooks will be joining the lab this fall as new Master's students. Two Frostburg State undergraduates, Liam Batchelor and Justin Hansen, have also recently joined the lab and are helping out with the SPARCnet project to better understand woodland salamander population dynamics. Justin will also be working this summer to organize and expand the FSU Herpetology teaching collection.

We are currently recruiting multiple graduate students for Fall 2017. One potential research project is part of a regional collaborative with USGS and various universities call SPARCnet (Salamander Population and Adaptation Research Collaboration Network). It involves spatial capture-recapture of salamanders using coverboards. You can read more about the project at: http://seansterrett.wixsite.com/sparcnet. A second project is another spatial capture-recapture project with pond turtles. As a statistical ecologist, I also have a number of collaborative projects with other researches on taxa including fish, birds, and small mammals.
Students will be supported with Teaching Assistantships. There are additional opportunities for students with their own funding through NSF, EPA, or other fellowships. Please contact me if you are interested in any of these projects and include a description of your research interests and experience along with a resume that includes your GPA. Dr. Hocking is now hosting a weekly meeting for people interested in learning and practicing R and Statistics. The intent is to have a common time for people to work on programming and statistics so there is the ability for collaborative learning rather than struggling in isolation. Some weeks there will be mini lessons or presentations, but most weeks it will just be a time to work through problems in a collegial group atmosphere with other R users. Meetings are currently at Frostburg State University in Compton Science Center room 321, Fridays from 3-4pm. All are welcome. Check out https://frostburgrusers.wordpress.com to find our more about the group, find links to resources, and keep abreast of changes in meeting times and locations.
